African Stars gets Comoros side in CAF Champs League

MTC Premiership reigning champions African Stars will have to overcome Comoros Island side Volcano Club de Moroni in the preliminary round of the 23rd edition of the Total CAF African Champions League, the draws reveals.

African Stars, Namibia Premier League (NPL) winners for the past season 2017/18, are in the draw for the champions league season of 2018/19 and are drawn against Comoros Island’s Volcano Club de Moroni, with their first duel set on the Island on 27 or 28 November with the return leg in Windhoek set for 4 or 5 December 2018 in the Preliminary Round.

The winner will then take on either South Africa’s Orlando Pirates or Seychelles’ side Light Stars in the First Round with matches scheduled for 14 to 23 December 2018 and the winner joining other 14 sides, plus the defending champions in the Group stages for the 2018/19 Total CAF Champions League season.

The winners of the CAF Champions League takes home US$ 2.5 Million and runner up US$ 1.5 Million. Semifinalist gets US$ 800 000, quarterfinalists, US$ 650 000; third and bottom of the group, US$ 550 000 each. National Association such as the NFA then gets an additional equivalent share of 5% for each amount awarded to that country’s club.

The top club sides from Africa's football leagues are invited to participate in this competition, which is the premier club football competition in the continent and the equivalent to the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the tournament earns a berth for the FIFA Club World Cup, a tournament contested between the champion clubs from all six continental confederations.

Egypt's Al Ahly is the most successful club in the competition's history, having won the tournament eight times. Egyptian clubs have accumulated the highest number of victories, winning the title 14 times. The reigning champions are Wydad AC of Morocco, who secured their second win in the competition after defeating Ahly in the 2017 Final.
