New-look Kavango West gears up for Skorpion Zinc Cup

The Kavango West Under-17 team are working hard for the upcoming 2018 Skorpion Zinc Under17 Cup taking place at Grootfontein from 24-27 August with advancing from the group stage high on the agenda.

Kavango West team coach Sikongo Kapumburu is working entirely with new players to the setup and have been working hard on aspects of the game such as ball control, possession and playing under instructions. The coach also have to accelerate the fitness of the players.

“Working with new players is not easy, which is why we chose younger players this year, allowing them to play for at least one or two more years and that also comes with too much work on the training ground with them and so far so good”, Kapumburu.

With the absence of any football academies in their region, Kapumburu hope this will keep the boys playing under the same age group long enough to gain experience, while also keeping them away from mischievous behaviour.

To test themselves, the boys from Kavango West’s U/17 met their arch-rivals Kavango East and they lost 3-2 ahead of their trip to Grootfontein to compete in Group B against Omaheke, Erongo, Oshikoto and Ohangwena.

“We are underdogs, but expect more from us. We really want to put our region on the map, so other regions should be ready.” Kapumburu warns.

Kapumburu express a great concern about the hardship of balancing sports and academic work for the players in the regional team and adds that more parents are starting to accept and support their children in sports.

Omusati regions are the treble defending champions of the Skorpion Zinc Cup and are in Group C together with Khomas, Zambezi and Karas. Action will start on Friday, 24 August at 09h00 at the Omulunga stadium with the Hardap taking on Oshana, followed by Otjozondjupa against Kavango East and then Ohangwena versus Omaheke. Altogether, nine matches each will take place on Friday and Saturday with eight reserved for Sunday four for Monday.

In the semi-finals to be played on Monday, 27 August, Group A winners will take on Group C winners, while Group B winners will take on the runner-up from Group A/B.
