The Namibian Cup at Gobabis during Easter

Newspaper Cup Draw

The annual Namibian newspaper Cup was launched on Tuesday at Soccer House and will see some exiting regional clashes during the Easter weekend in Gobabis.

As defending champions, the Khomas region will sit out the start of the tenth edition of the under-20 regional competition and will get involved in the action from the next round, which is the quarterfinals stage.

The tournament to be played at the Legare Stadium from 22 to 25 April will also see national team selectors in the stand to scout for unpolished germs that can form part of the national junior sides and subsequently the senior national side the Brave Warriors.

The hosting region Omaheke Governor Laura McLeod, promised great hospitality at the showpiece of free football.

“I can promise you that we are ready and prepared to host the event and would like to believe that the Namibian people will attend the event in their numbers,” McLeod said.

The woman behind the Namibian newspaper Cup, Editor Gwen Lister, spoke of the economic benefits of the tournament and called on Namibia to come out in numbers.

“In the past all the regional councils have been complimentary of the amount of money they got from hosting the tournament. I can promise that everything that will be used will be purchased locally in the region and that gives a sign of our commitment of assisting the local economy,” Lister said.

First round matches will start on Friday and on Saturday, 23 April the quarterfinals will be played including the losers’ matches. On Sunday, 24 April the semi-finals will be played including a women’s match and the Brave Warriors vs. the Shadow Team match.

The main final and the losers final will be played on Monday afternoon, 25 April.

The overall winners of the competition will this year receive N$18 300, and the losing finalists will win N$10 000. The losing semi-finalists will each receive N$8 000 and the winners of the losers’ section, N$4 000.

The recipient of the Fair Play Award will get a trophy and N$2 100 , while the Player of the Series, the Match Official, the Goalkeeper, and the Top Goals corer of the tournament will each get N$1 000.
