The Young Warriors made a positive start to their TotalEnergies U20 AFCON COSAFA Qualifiers campaign, defeating Mauritius 1-0  in their opening match of the tournament at the Zipeto Stadium on Friday,18 September.

Captain Lukas Sakeus proved decisive, finding the back of the net to hand Namibia an important opening victory. His influential performance earned him the Man of the Match award.

Head Coach Lucky Kakuva was delighted with the result, emphasising the importance of starting the tournament on a positive note.

“The first match of the tournament is very important because it sets the tone for the rest of the competition. I am delighted with the result and proud of the boys for executing the game plan,” said Kakuva.

The coach, however, acknowledged that there was still room for improvement, particularly in front of goal.

“We created opportunities and could have scored more goals, but what is important is that we got the result and the players showed commitment to the game plan. We will take the positives and continue to improve as the tournament progresses,” he added.

The Young Warriors will now turn their attention to their next match against host, Mozambique on 22 September as they look to build on their winning start and strengthen their position in the competition.
