Omaheke wins Fourth Newspaper Cup crown

Omaheke’s golden ticket Jandzmukaperes Muundjua scored the only goal of the match for Omaheke to win the 2018 The Namibian Newspaper Cup title over Kavango East in the final match played on Easter Monday at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex.

The two sides met in the final after Omaheke bested Otjozondjupa and Kavango East were winners over Oshikoto in the semi-finals played on Easter Sunday and man of the match Muundjua scored in the second half to hand Omaheke victory and their fourth title overall.

Omaheke have won the Namibian Newspaper Cup in 2001, 2002, 2009 and now in 2018 and are now equal with Khomas who won in 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011.

On Easter Sunday, Omaheke defeated the defending champions Otjozondjupa 4-3 on penalties following a goalless stalemate after 90 minutes while Kavango East beat Oshikoto 1-0 to book their place in the final through a goal by Reinhard Shamwaka.

In the third place playoff match, Oshikoto beat Otjozondjupa 7-6 on penalties to clinch the third-place on Easter Monday with Simaneka Abeb netting the opening goal for Oshikoto as early as the 6th minute of the first half before Rivaldo Nanuseb leveled terms for Otjozondjupa.

The encounter failed to produce an outright winner during the regulation time and the referee called for a penalty shoot-out and it was Oshikoto that edged their opponents 7-6 to take third place against the defending champions, Otjozondjupa. Oshikoto’s Alberto Abeb won the Man of the Match accolade.

Altogether, the four-days under-20 tournament produced 26 goals with Otjozondjupa’ s Uatanavi Mbuende voted as the Best player of the 2018 The Namibian Newspaper Cup while Narire Munika from Kavango East is the Best Goalkeeper. Otjozondjupa’ s Rivaldo Nanuseb top scored with three goals.
