Omusati region are geared up and ready to give their all in the 18th edition of one of the most exciting football competitions on the local calendar, The Namibian Newspaper Cup, scheduled for 30 March to the 2 April at Katima Mulilo.

Drawn against the host Zambezi, last edition’s runner’s ups Erongo Region, and the Cup’s inaugural winners Omaheke Region, in Group B, the 2015 newspaper cup winners vowed to outdo themselves as they vie to lift the silverware for the second time.

“For you to win the cup, you have to go through tough opponents” says the region’s U/20 Coach, Shipena Nakalondo.

Nakalondo, who has been the region’s U/20 coach since 2013, says the cup is a great initiative offering benefits that go beyond its participants. According to him, the prestigious event does not only inspire boys from junior teams such as the U/17, but as well paves the way for younger aspiring soccer players from various regions.

Omusati aims to replicate the exploits from their only victory in 2015 and coach Nakalondo acknowledges the host’ crowd advantage, but says it’s a cause of no concern as they managed to defeat Kunene under the same circumstances when the cup was hosted in Outjo in 2015, and is confident history can repeat itself.

Nakalondo confirms that they promoted five players from the U/17 team that won the Skorpion Zinc Cup last year and stated that in the absence of one of the team’s key player and captain Daniel Kamanya, he looks forward to seeing the new players put their experience to work.

Other groups are as follows:

Group A: Kunene, Khomas, Otjozondjupa, Kavango West
Group C: Oshikoto, Oshana, Hardap
Group D: Ohangwena, Kavango East, //Karas
