3 April 2026 – The 2026 Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup kicked off in thrilling fashion at Westdene Stadium in Keetmanshoop, delivering a full day of high-energy football, standout individual performances, and a vibrant atmosphere both on and off the pitch with a total of 22 goals being scored on opening day.

Opening Matches Set the Tone

Day 1 began with exciting fixtures across multiple fields. In the opening match, Otjozondjupa Region secured a confident 2-0 victory over Hardap Region, thanks to a clinical brace from Nathan Damaseb, who was later named Man of the Match.

Meanwhile, Omaheke Region and Kavango East Region battled to a 1-1 draw, with Vepukisa Tjonga opening the scoring before Nyangana Muyenga equalized.

Oshikoto Dominate Early

Oshikoto Region emerged as one of the standout teams of the day. They opened their campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Ohangwena Region. Josh Kanku led the charge with a brace, while Michael Aluhe and Festus Trofimus also found the net.

They later followed up with a hard-fought 1-0 win over host //Karas Region, with Festus Trofimus scoring the decisive goal. Oshikoto ended the day with a perfect six points, placing themselves firmly as early contenders.

Hosts and Coastal Teams Impress

//Karas Region gave their home supporters something to celebrate with a 2-1 win over Kavango West Region. Goals from Tuundjakuje Kandingua and Johan Kooper sealed the victory.

Erongo Region also impressed, edging Oshana Region 1-0 thanks to a late strike from Rashid Noabeb.

Khomas and Hardap Bounce Back

Khomas Region secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Oshana Region, with Martino Kauzuu converting from the penalty spot in a tightly contested encounter.

Hardap Region responded strongly after their opening loss, defeating Kavango East Region 3-1. Goals from Esegiel Eiseb, Nathan van Wyk, and Mariano Smith ensured they ended the day on a high note.

Omaheke Stay Unbeaten

Omaheke Region enjoyed a solid start to the tournament, finishing Day 1 unbeaten. After their draw against Kavango East, they secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Otjozondjupa Region.

Vepukisa Tjonga continued his fine form, playing a key role in his team’s attacking success as Omaheke climbed to four points in Group A.

Looking Ahead

With Oshikoto leading the charge and several regions closely contesting group standings, the stage is set for an intense Day 2 as teams fight for qualification into the knockout stages.
