In a push towards the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] that is scheduled to commence on the 13th January 2024 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the Brave Warriors were boosted by a significant financial injection of N$2.4 million, courtesy of the MTC Knockout Project.
This collaborative project uniting MTC, the Road Fund Administration (RFA), Namibia Housing Enterprise (NHE), and The Namibia Special Risks Insurance Association (NASRIA), aims to fortify the national football team’s preparedness for the tournament in Ivory Coast.
The financial backing arrives at a crucial moment, affording the team substantial resources to meticulously prepare for the demanding tournament ahead, affirming a commitment to the Brave Warriors’ triumph on the continental platform.
Tim Ekandjo, the Chief Human Capital, Marketing, and Corporate Affairs Officer at MTC, lauded the resilience of the national team, recognising their tenacious journey to qualify for AFCON despite confronting various hurdles.
At the hand over event, Ekandjo said “The bravery exhibited by our national team is commendable. Despite formidable challenges, they emerged as true warriors, securing their spot in the upcoming 2023 African premier football tournament, AFCON.”
“This collective effort signifies more than just financial aid. It stands as a testament to the unwavering unity and solidarity of the Namibian community, rallying behind their football heroes.”
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Sports, Youth and National Service, Hon. Agnes Tjongarero, the Director of Sports, Ms. Jo-Ann Manuel applauded the Brave Warriors for their 4th qualification to the prestigious tournament, and assured that the government would rally behind the team, in support of it’s progression past the group stages.
Although the initial target of N$5 million for the MTC Knockout Project was set, the funds totaled N$2.4 million. Noteworthy contributions included N$100,000 each from the RFA and NHE and N$150,000 generated from gate receipts of the Dr. Hage Geingob Cup, supplemented by an additional N$50,000 from the Namibia Special Risk Insurance Association.
N$2 million was generously provided by MTC, solidifying their commitment to bolstering the Brave Warriors’ campaign towards the tournament.
In their drawn group E, Namibia face neighbours South Africa,Mali, and Tunisia.
