Tigers beat UNAM in Standard Bank Top 8 opener

Llewelyn Stanley scored the only goal of the match as Tigers beat UNAM 1-0 in the opening encounter of the Standard Bank Top 8 Cup played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Thursday night.

Two two sides met in the inaugural eidtion of the Standard Bank Top 8 Cup and they ditched out a perfect opener clusted with a lot of goalmouth actions as well as tactical discipline as no side gave in.

But it was the great strike from midfielder Llewelyn Stanley from inside the box that flew past Charles Uirab in the UNAM goal , that gave Tigers the lead and the win in the second half.

Stanley deservedly received the man of the match award as well for his performance on the day that came with N$2000.

Before the opening match, Standard Bank CEO Junias Mungunda and Namibia Premier League Chairman Patrick Kauta unveiled the trophy and officially opened the tournament with a ceremonial kicks off the balls into the stands.

With all the quarterfinal matches taking place at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, on Friday night Mighty Gunners will play host to Tura Magic at 20h00.

Saturday will see the quarterfinals continue with Black Africa taking on Eleven Arrows at 17h00 before league champions African Stars lock horns with Orlando Pirates for the second successive Saturday, both games at the Sam Nujoma Stadium. The two sides met last week in the 2018/2019 MTC Premiership season and Stars got the three points with a 1-0 win over an improved youthful Pirates side.
