The treble-defending champions of the Skorpion Zinc Cup Omusati Region planning to make it four titles in a row at the 2018 Skorpion Zinc under-17 Cup slated for Omulunga Stadium, Grootfontein from 24 to 27 August.

The defending champions are due to face Zambezi, //Karas, and Khomas in Group C and having won the cup on for three consecutive years, Omusati looks to triumph yet again, only under a different coach this time, Iipinge Shikongo.

“The head coach moved to Windhoek sometime this year, so for progress sake, I picked up from him. I always tell the boys that others have made their history and won their trophies, so if they can, why can’t you?” .

Shikongo, who was the assistant coach for the team last year, started coaching in 2010, as an assistant coach for Blue Birds, and has been part of the sport since. He says past victories have boosted them as a region, and most importantly, showed the youth that they are not inferior.

Furthermore, he says the confidence of the team is very high, especially after a two- all draw against Outapi United, in a friendly held this past weekend.

Shikongo adds that despite all their victories, elders in their Region are still reluctant to give their blessings, with regard to their children participating in sports, or even start to accept that there is a possible career for them, in sports such as football.

“We planned on promoting the top goal scorer from last year’s edition, Elia Willem, to the U/20, but due to poor academic performance, his parents disallowed it” Shikongo reveals.

The confident coach says working with different coaches of various calibres in football, has given him the pleasure of mastering working with youth, the experience of winning various tournaments and the art of gathering strength, courage and confidence in order to succeed.

Host Otjozondjupa are drawn in Group A, with Kavango East, Hardap and Kunene. Group B has Kavango West, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Omaheke and Erongo, while group C has //Karas, Omusati, Khomas and Zambezi.
