Brave Warriors lose on penalties to Zambia

The Brave Warriors lost 4-3 on penalties against Zambia in the 2018 COSAFA Cup quarterfinal match on Saturday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane following a hard fought goalless 90 minutes.

the two neighbors met for the umpteenth time and in this latest tussle, it was the Brave Warriors that shaded proceedings in an eventful 90 minutes. Deon Hotto and Riaan Hanamub proved their worth as wingbacks as Panduleni Nekundi and Vitapi Ngaruka wasted some early chances.

Ricardo Mannetti's side continued to crate chances and Zambian-based defender Teberius Lombard and Dynamo Fredericks also wasted chances, with the former shooting over the bar with a long range effort, while the latter volleyed over the bar from close range.

In the second half, the Brave Warriors upped their search for the elusive opener and MTC Premiership Top Goal-scorer and Player of the Season Nekundi came close while goalkeeper Max Mbaeva stood firm at the other side to keep his side in the game.

Mannetti rang changes as Tura Magic stiker Itamunua Keimuine replaced Absalom Iimbondi on 62 minutes and Nekundi came off for Eleven Arrows man Willem Pinehas.

The match headed into penalties and Zambia immediately took the lead when Ronald Ketjijere's shot was brilliantly saved by Nsabata. When Hanamub hit the crossbar Namibia were suddenly 2-0 down, and although Lazarous Kambole hit the post, Zambia prevailed with Clatous Chama scoring the winning goal.

Namibia have now been demoted to the Cosafa Plate division where they will play the loser between South Africa and Madagascar on Tuesday.
