The Young Warriors opened their 2017 Cosafa Under -20 Championship Group C with a 1-0 victory over Angola on Friday at the Arthur Davis Stadium in Kitwe, Zambia, and go top of the group following Zimbabwe and Lesotho goals draw on Thursday.

Tura Magic striker Enzo Mungendje scored on 14 minutes, tapping in from close range. Eldery Morgan was fouled and Anthony Kham's powerful free-kick hit the post and Mungendje was first to react and give the Namibia the all-important early lead and they managed to hold onto it until the end of 90 minutes. They go top of Group C on three points with Lesotho and Zimbabwe in second and third on a point each, following their opening draw on Thursday.

Young Warriors coach Gerald Guther is delighted with the victory: “It’s always good to start with a win, especially given the fact that the other group game ended in a draw so we knew what we needed to do. The score-line could have been more goals for us and we will have to improve on that ahead of our next game,” says Guther.

The coach adds that defensively they were on point against Angola and now looks ahead to face Lesotho on Sunday, 10 December.

“Our defensive play was sound today and that helped a lot and we now need to reassemble and get our energy back and mentally prepare for Lesotho”, Guther states.

The Young Warriors will face Lesotho on Sunday, 10 December, 10h00, at Nkana Stadium and conclude Group C action against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, 12 December. Only the Group winners and the best placed runner-up from three groups will qualify for the semifinals to be played at the Arthur Davies Stadium on December 14. The third-place play-off and the final will move to the Levy Mwanawasa in Ndola on December 16.
